Becky Thayer: Mom & Beachbody Bad@$$

Becky is a mom of three and left her full-time job to transform her body and her health and start a new business. (Sounds exhausting, right?) But she does it with finesse and vulnerability, empowering others to transform their “mom bods” into the beautiful, life giving machines they are. Learn more about Becky’s journey as a full-time mom of three to her newly found passion of helping others be their best selves.

I’d like to publicly share that Becky was also my first paying client and she has been a huge supporter since. (Thank you.)

Exercise has always been a part of my life since I started playing competitive sports in 5th grade. It’s always been important to me to be strong. The part that was always missing for me was the nutrition aspect, which I never really noticed until I got into my 30s. Perhaps my metabolism slowed down, maybe it was kids, but I could no longer out-workout a bad diet. After my third baby in Oct 2018 I knew I’d have to do more than a workout video to lose the weight and rebuild my core strength. I became a Beachbody coach to hold myself accountable.

I was certified as a Master Coach to guide participants the the Ultimate Portion Fix nutrition program. My mission is to empower women, specifically moms with small children at home, with the tools, education, and support they need to get healthy and feel good in their skin.

Women are so powerful but too often put themselves last as they care for their family’s and friends’ needs before their own. Layer in mom guilt, feelings of unworthiness, insecurities about body image and there’s a whole lot of issues to fight against.

Many times its the fear of failure that stops people from trying, especially women. They don’t want to say their “on a diet” or trying to lose weight because if it doesn’t happen, then in some way they’re admitting publicly that they have a problem but are unable to do anything about it. Its “easier” to just sweep it under the rug, avoid, wear a mask and think “someday I’ll get in shape”… until someday becomes something serious or they wake up to find half of their life has past. I personally didn’t know how to eat healthy, my thought was to eat less instead of eating more good stuff. There is so much I didn’t know about food and our bodies, I’d imagine this is the same for many people. You don’t know what you don’t know.

My mission is to put this gift into more women’s hands, its really a simple formula, but its not easy to do. That’s why having a Coach and a support system helps.

WHAT FEARS HAVE YOU OVERCOME DURING THIS JOURNEY?

BeckyHeadshot_MG_2369.jpg

It is “easier” to do what’s comfortable and convenient. And I say “easier” that way because being overweight or out of shape or having high cholesterol or heart disease is not easy, but choosing the activities that lead to these issues can be, like choosing to watch TV for several hours after work instead of getting a walk or a workout in. Choosing to drive thru McDonalds for dinner 4-5 times a week is easier than cooking a healthy meal. But many people wait until these issues appear to realize they need to take care of their bodies.

Its hard for me to feel weak or old. I believe you’re only as old as you feel and being strong keeps me feeling young. I had to overcome the mental roadblocks more than the physical ones. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be hard if you practice and stay consistent. And there is always time in the day, it just has to be a priority and you sometimes have to sacrifice other things you like to do, like sleep in or drink wine every day.

WHAT ARE A FEW THINGS YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF DURING THIS JOURNEY?

1. I am strong.

2. I can learn new things.

3. It’s not just genetics at play.

4. I have control over what I put into my body and I am responsible for my part.

IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO OTHERS BASED ON WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED?

We are all just people given the same 24 hours in the day. Good and bad habits are formed after many years of repetition. They can be broken if you really want to change some aspect of your life. You have to want to make change for change to happen.

Your why has to be bigger than your excuses.

If you don’t change nothing will change. But you can make time, you can make healthy substitutions and still enjoy the treats you love. You can have fun doing it, and you can be in the best shape of your life at any age.

WHAT’S YOUR HOPE OR VISION FOR THE FUTURE?

BeckyHeadshot_MG_2509-Edit.jpg

I know what exercise has done for me physically & emotionally. I see so many moms suffer in silence with feelings of doubt, anxiety, fear, self-loathing, and its so sad to me because women in general are so strong. I’d love to see more women raise their hands and say they need help instead of trying to do it all (perfectly) alone. I hope sharing my journey and experiences as honestly I can will give others the courage to own their own truth, which may be ugly and imperfect, and make the changes that they are craving. It is hard, its scary, but it doesn’t have to be done alone, but I also cannot do it for anyone else. That word “ownership” is very important to change. Its one thing to want it, its another thing to work for it.

ANY FINAL PARTING THOUGHTS?

I run monthly bootcamps where I guide women through a 4-6 week program, teaching them about proper nutrition & meal planning and guiding them through a series of workouts. Its never too late to join, today (whatever day it is) is the best time to join. Learn more about Becky’s virtual fitness coaching business and check out her lifestyle blog.
